Like other things one does here in Romania, renting an apartment is different than how we do in Canada.
There, you look through all kinds of classified media and get in touch with the landlords of the interesting looking spots, go check em out, and then you pick the one you like. Makes sense...
Here, you search online and get in touch with the Real Estate agency that 'owns' the listings and then meet with the respective real estate agents to look over the offers. Technically, it sounds more convenient, and I guess it can be. But real estate agents don't really care much for the measly 50% of 1st month commission compared to a purchase commission, so it's not like the service is out of this world. Secondly, it feels like there's an unnecessary party in the process because they're not doing anything that requires expertise or specialized training. When it comes down to it, I'm okay to call around and find my own spot, no reason to complicate things -but this is Romania, where simple things are complicated, and complicated things can be very easy :)
I met the agent in front of the first property, an older building on Titulescu str. not far from Piata Cipariu (Piata means Plaza/Square) near the city center. The place was renovated, but it had sort of a funny layout; there were two rooms, one on each end of the apartment, and an eat in kitchen. Both the rooms were bedrooms with Queen beds and I just wasn't feeling the layout. We quickly left and went to the next place in his car (that's pretty cool service I guess). The second place was much nicer than the first. The building was three years old and the apartment was spotless with brand new modern appliances. Both the living room and bedroom were minimally furnished and everything was very clean and in good taste -but it was a good 20 minute walk from the city center on Dorobantilor str., and even further from work. Worst of all, the rent was really pushing the envelope. I'm still somewhat considering it, but only if I really find nothing else.
Tomorrow, I set up a couple of viewings for places within walking distance to work and if neither work out I'll have to call yet another agency. It's pretty likely I'm going to end up finding a place sooner rather than later, the question is where?
